Do you ever feel like you need a crystal ball when thinking about staffing and employee retention? I have an idea for you!
Have you seen the movie Back to the Future? I want you to picture Marty’s friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, the inventor with white hair. Now pretend that I’m Doc. I just flew into your parking lot and said, “Great Scott! The next employee you hire is going to work for you for the next 20 years!” What would your reaction be?
Would you be happy to not worry about losing her? Would you give him some of your most important duties because you know he isn’t going anywhere? Would you train her so she could run the organization smoothly each time you went on vacation? Or would you put him in a corner without a plan at all? I know your answer. You would invest in an employee that is going to stay by your side for 20 years!
So, what is the point of my fictional story? Even though we have no way of knowing how long an employee will stay, you should assume that they are in it for the long haul. You need to invest in them because they are the future of your company. You will only grow and succeed if you have a team that believes in your vision as much as you do.
Investing in employees doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to be intentional. Start by looking at your weaknesses and their strengths. Find the training they need to become even stronger in that area. Where do they lack confidence? Hire a coach to help them. When you help your employees grow and use the gifts and talents that God gave them, your organization will grow. You’ll see more ideas, more sales, and more success.
Whether you want to talk about employee development, organizational goals, COVID, policies, or benefits, just do it. Communication is a very important ingredient for employee retention! If you need some communication help or guidance, let me know.
