Career Check Up

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you love your job?

Do you look forward to going to work most days or do you live for Friday?  Is your job energizing or is it an energy vampire?  These aren’t trick questions.  I’m only asking so you can look at your job in a more objective, helpful way.  It’s kind of like going to the doctor for a checkup.

When you think about the details of your job, it allows you to figure out what you enjoy and what you dislike.  That information is helpful when proposing changes in your current role or when you’re looking for another job.  It allows you to find something with more of what you like and less of what you don’t.

I have a challenge for you.  Take some time this week to jot down the things you enjoy about your job.  Is it interaction with others?  Do you like analyzing some details?  Are you an organizer?  It can even be things like the location or schedule you work.  Add notes to your phone or just keep a list on a piece of paper.

Once the week is over, you will have learned a few things.  You’ll have a better understanding of what you like (and dislike) about your job.  You’ll also have a great list of experiences to add to your master resume.  Finally, this list will let you know if it’s time to make a career change.  The only thing scarier about changing jobs is staying in one that makes you miserable.

When you’re ready to make a change, be sure to download a copy of my handout Common Resume Mistakes.  You got this!
